Spooktober Day 27 The ENTITY!!!!!
Day 27
The Entity
Entering the home stretch before we get to the top of this months theme. We’re now entering into the territory of, fairly known and underseen. Under appreciated.
Most of you might be familiar with some of the titles, or remember seeing the box art but never the film. Or maybe you actually had and you know what wonders await us in these next few releases.
So here we are, a personal favorite, and in my opinion one of the more creepier ghost movies.
Which there are a list of, and I may share one day soon.
But for now, lets sit and focus on The Entity.
When you feel something strange in the shower, and ghost sex banging occurs.
When you get a chair thrown at you, because a ghost was attacking you.
When a college drops thousands of dollars to create the worlds largest freezer.
When an unseen hand gets you off faster than your own can.
You might be experiencing The Entity.
And oh what an experience it is too.
It’s definitely an oddity, both in its story, and place among VHS brothers and sisters on the shelf. Ghost stories have had a few different faces over the years and revisiting a lot from before my time and up too today. It’s still a roulette wheel of good, bad, insane, and dumb as hell. But stuck between each of those slices on the wheel, there is an even thinner wedge for smart and well done. This one falls just a hair away from Well done and hitting good.
That’s not bad what so ever. That’s a sweet spot for sure.
The film centers around a hard working single mother and her family. She’s doing the best she can with what she had, and it ain’t easy. She’s trying to save every penny she can and arriving late is a normal occurrence. But it’s no excuse for the house being a mess! She leaves her eldest son in charge of the little ones while she’s away working, and even manages time for a boyfriend, when she can.
After returning from work one evening, she finds dishes all over the table, nothing washed, the fridge door left open. It grumbles her rightly. But her eldest assures her things are okay, he’ll take care of it, and for her to relax now that she’s home. He’s a good kid and cares for his mom. He doesn’t even mind her dating, he’s actually happy she’s moving on with her life. Which kudos on that as most movies tend to lean on the “This guy aint gonna be my father, you can’t replace dad!” trope. This didn’t.
As she’s readying for bed and applying much needed lotion. She feels a slap across her face from an unseen hand. The next thing she knows, she’s thrown to her own bed, pillow over her face and she’s being assaulted. It’s a sudden hard hitting attack, that ends just as quickly as it began. We can see her body rocking on the bed, the pillow smothering her. Then it abruptly stops. No footsteps no noises. Nothing. It takes her a few moments to get her senses together and when she does, she screams out! Waking her children and sending her eldest into a speed run for her bedroom. She tells him someone was there, and they’d attacked her. So he goes searching every room, every closet, under the beds. You name it, he’s searched it. But they find nothing. She hugs her little ones and eventually is calmed enough to relax. Everyone is a bit on edge, but manage to return to their respective spaces and attempt sleeping.
But mom is on patrol. Searching her room, making sure nothing of value was stolen, nothing had been gone through, and scanning her room listening for even the slightest sound. Once she’s assured things are alright she decides its time for much needed sleep, and the ghost of Pheonix Wright slams his fist into her nightstand with a STRONG objection to her sleep request. The vanity mirror starts shaking, her drawers start trembling and moving. Things are not calm in her room! So she wisely NOPES out of the entire situation, grabs her kids and off they go to a friends house to stay the night. Which bless her for having such an awesome and understanding friend. No questions asked, no hesitation. This lady just lets her and her family right on in and makes beds for everyone.
The next morning while preparing coffee she decides to ask her what was going on and figure things out from there as to what they should do. She does her best to be honest and tells her friend that she was sexually assaulted, and attacked. But there was no one there, and when it ended. They were gone. She even admits to herself and her friend it sounds crazy. But her friend is on the nominee list for Best Friend of the Year, she tells her that she is ABSOLUTELY not crazy, she’s in fact one of the most sanest sane people she knows! She tries being delicate about everything and understanding, so she tells her about a free clinic she can go to, talk to someone, get checked over and go from there. Again. This is the kind of friend you want around. Not just for instances of ghost assaults, but in general. Yeah.
Well with every new morning there is a new sunrise and a new mood apparently. As her friends husband wakes and has MANY questions, as well as harsh words for his wife and her rash choices to be helpful. But the family is already packing and moving on out the front door, not wanting to cause further arguments or make a scene. Instead the family spends the day at the beach, clearing their heads and trying to figure out where to go from there, Sadly the only place they have to go is back home.
Which her son inspects before the rest of the family make their way back inside. Checking rooms and windows. Making sure nothing was stolen or any homeless people were camping out there, jerking off on their sofa.
So mom comes in and does her own inspection. Finding things to be in order. Though entering her own room is still a challenge for her. But she soldiers onward and. Well nothing. No attacks, no unseen figures. However she does hear something rattling. This cues the ghost music and she is back to panic mode.
Which is something you will definitely remember from watching this movie. Any moment the ghost attacks, lifts a thing, shakes a thing, waggles its brow. You hear hard hitting pounding sounds. It last the entirety of the attack and can get a bit grating at times. But it certainly gets its point across.
So she’s running around screaming and raising hell. Her son runs through the house and again finds nothing. He thinks he can hear the sound though, and feels it’s coming from under the house! So he quickly and against his mothers demands scurries under the house. Finding what he feels was the source. A rusty pipe scooting and causing vibrations. The mom doesn’t buy it, but at least it’s something!
Well her son, ever vigilante and protective. Leaves his door open so if she needs him for anything. He can be there in a flash. He’s a good, and it’s nice seeing the family support, when no one has any idea what is going on with the mom. But no one is calling her crazy.
And speaking of support network. Her best friend survived the fight with her husband! She has come to visit her bestie. More then that. She’s there to spend the night and look after her. It’s a really cool gesture. But also a nice look at what passed for lingerie long ago. It’s not too bad. Not bad at all….anyway.
So the night passes without incident. Eveyone Is able to find some sleep. The ladies share a bed and no ghost adventures for anyone. Strength in numbers people!
Until morning that is, and in the most inconvenient of times. While she’s headed to work, driving along. We hear the familiar ghost attack music spring into full effect. And the ghost is trying to show her he knows a shortcut to her office. Straight into traffic to the side of a building. But all she can do is hold on and pray jesus is taking the wheel. She can’t stomp on the breaks, she can barely steer the car. Fighting against what or whoever it is that’s taring it from her.
It’s a less than ideal situation and for some, just a Tuesday.
Well thankfully she has decided to visit a doctor. Where she gives us all the deets. Which are a bit disturbing given we the audience have seen what happened. But now are told in intimate detail. The fact she was sexually assaulted, but could not see who or how many did it. That she felt them inside her and even yes. Finish. It’s awkward and uncomfortable for everyone. But the doctor hears her out and does his best to make sense of things. Sending her back home with the promise to get back to her as soon as he can.
So homeward we return and what better way to relax than with Mr. Bubbles, warm water, and our first nude scene. No I won’t comment on her nipples, or backside. But it is worth noting we get this scene. Does anything bad accompany the scene? WELL OF COURSE IT DOES! This ghost is a perv of the worst kind, or its Kevin Bacon while invisible. You know what I’m talking about, and it’s a very real threat to all of us.
So we now have another ghost rape. There’s no other way to put it. And this is not gentle. This is brutal, physical and unrelenting. Which this film does not shy away from. The horror comes in the attacks performed on her. Both during and after. She’s tossed around like a rag doll, restrained, choked out by shower curtains and tossed to the floor after.
She returns to the doctors office reporting what happened. He gives her an exam and we see just how bad the attack was. She has large bite marks on her breast, bruises on her shoulders. Huge bruises across her inner thighs. Hand imprints and bites on her ankles and arms. It’s pretty intense for sure.
I failed to mention her name, because they hadn’t really brought it up until now. Carla.
Her doctor assures her, nothing is physically wrong with her. Her intellect is of a superior kind. So he’s left with her mental state being the cause. He tells her how the trauma of losing her husband, even other past events could lead to causing irrational behavior, thoughts and such. That these can lay dormant and strike with a vengeance. So he does what any reasonable doctor would do, he prescribes her tranquilizers and ask that she have someone close by and that she get some sleep. Problem solved!
This doctor is pretty cool overall, even if he doesn’t see or hear everything being said. But he’s doing his best, and seems genuinely to care about her. Which again is a nice change, he’s not fully aware what it is going on with her. But he’s going by what he sees in his reports and from his testing as well as her behavior. He really does feel she could be experiencing some traumatic events. Just not so sure where they’re coming from, but he isn’t rushing to call her cray cray.
He even finds her outside his office waiting on a cab as her car isn’t yet fixed, and I wouldn’t blame her not wanting to drive after what happened. But he drives her home and when dropping her off, he figures why not have a look around the house as well. Maybe get an idea what could be going on at home, maybe discover if she’s on drugs? Who knows!
But he takes a look around and tells her, in his opinion. That the house is not haunted. He can’t explain what’s happening. But he’s trying to be helpful. He sits down with her and they discuss her family, her life. She informs him about her scary religious father, some of the abuse she suffered from him, causing her to runaway at 16. Where she ended up falling in love with a very handsome man that believed in very hard banging sex. That her first born was the best thing to have come from that relationship. Moving on to her next relationship and eventually being on her own. Loving and raising her family on her own etc. It serves to purposes, though she may not see it at first. But maybe she picks up on it a bit. The doctor, though caring, is building a profile of her. And based off of her relationships she mentioned, and her father. It’s beginning to make sense where some of these things are manifesting. But he’s putting it on the back burner for now. Because we have to get the doctor out of the house for another ghost assault. Which comes at the WORST time!
During ice cream Sundae night. And we aren’t talking a normal Sundae like today, no. We are talking old fashioned over sized huge servings ice cream sundae time. It’s good stuff. But sadly she is not going to get any of that. As she’s coming to join her children at the table. All of them get to see her being choked out and thrown against a sofa. Sat in place, choking. Gasping out, lets forced open. Breast groped and thrusting hips. Her son rushes over to help but to no avail. He tries pulling her up but he’s forced back. Eventually the attack turns from her onto him. We can see him grappling with a very large but unseen being. But we also soon learn. This could be a force ghost, as soon there are lightning sparks shocking her sons hands down his arms. Throwing him back hard.
Well this definitely ruined ice cream sundae night!
So she ventures off to meet with the big brain doctors. Sharing her story, the doctor as well sharing his files on what happened, what he found, and the bruising, bite marks that occurred. He’s on her side and sharing everything possible to help her, as she does the same. With grace and dexterity. It’s not easy to discuss an assault, let alone a ghostly one. But she did it. Their answer?
Masturbation.
Yep. As the film says, well. One of the head doctors on the board, “She’s masturbating. This entire circus, she has invented it, to cover up what every little girl does.”, So yes. Obviously that’s the answer. I know it’s what’s caused my many MANY encounters with the dead, exposing themselves to me. I’m lying, I usually expose myself to them, it’s awkward.
To say the least.
However, more scarily. Is that our good doctor friend, admits that was also his first diagnosis too! Who knew the troubles masturbation has on us all mentally. However he corrects the doctor in charge, telling him ‘this isn’t a sixteen year old girl with an identity crisis!” these events are effecting not only her now, but her family too. So it can’t be that simple. Unless everyone in that house is masturbating and going insane!
Further more, Mr. head doctor believes that yes. Her story about her father, the young lover she had, another who was old enough to be her father. Everything points to the attacks she’s experiencing. Rough sex, abusive assaults. She cant partake in sex, it’s a thing she’s turned into an evil. So here comes her new boyfriend, a kind caring loving guy, older than her. She’s happy. So her mind can’t deal with that. She’s had nothing but crap relationships so, being in a good one, manifest these events in her mind.
To say things aren’t looking well for her with the doctors, is pretty accurate. But perhaps seeing her boyfriend well. Manfriend. Might help things! Prove those doctors wrong! Have all the normal missionary sex you can! Get it girl!
Well it’s a bit wasted unfortunately. No she doesn’t get attacked! No the ghost doesn’t join in either. This isn’t Pornhub.
But she tries talking with him about things, and finds it difficult to explain. Which I can’t blame her. She even figures as good as she feels with him around, maybe it’d be nice for them to pick up and just go. Doesn’t matter where, just go somewhere.
This is a test.
Sometimes, women, and men. We like to say things to our beloved. Just to hear a positive answer, Just to see if you’d say yes or agree with them. I had an ex out of the blue tell me, why don’t we get married? Just…run off and do it. No fancy party or guest. Just go do it, would you?” I thought they were being serious, and I was also 23 at the time and that wasn’t really something I thought too much into as we both seemed before that moment to be of the mind set we didn’t need an expensive piece of paper to show we loved each other. So I didn’t say hell yeah lets do it. For that. She got sad, and down. Once I saw that of course, and she told me she just wanted to hear me say it. Well of course I let loose the flood gates of oh yes lets do it, get dressed. But nope. I didn’t pass that test.
So he doesn’t pass hers as well. He hits her with silly things called facts. What about her job? Teaching? What about the kids? What about his work? So she is down, he see’s it and tries to make amends but she’s done. Still just happy to be with him and held. Comforted. But you can tell, and she admits. That being with him made her for the first time in a long time feel sane and safe. So if being with him meant more nights of the same and a return to normalcy. It makes sense. But you can also see the cracks in their relationship. He tells her they can take off together once he’s back from another business trip. Which upsets her further because apparently he’s constantly gone on these trips and rarely stays long. Just long enough for dinner, drinks and a night or two together.
She returns home. Uneased again and waiting for whatever happens to happen. But thankfully nothing does. She’s even able to read in her bed and finally, at last. Pass out. Off to dream land and happier for it.
Until the ghost decides to say a fine how do you do, and how does it do so? In the worst way possible. There’s no violence, no tossing her around or choking. This time it’s incredibly creepy well done effects. She’s asleep, her night robe open. We see invisible hands pawing and groping her breast, even the faint sounds of a mouth suckling at her breast. Seeing it with the practical effects is. Well convincingly scary. Worst of all she in her mind felt it was a sex dream, and woke just in time to feel she’d had an orgasm. It’s fucked up.
And she responds justifiably by taring her room apart, screaming!
So naturally the doctors feel she’s actually crazy now. When she’s very sadly instead broken.
Her doctor believes she is suicidal, these thoughts are driving her to depression and putting her into a state where she’s trying to take her own life. She calls him out on this, she never tried to kill herself! But he takes the incident in her car to be an attempt on ending her life. So he suggest having her admitted for psychiatric evaluation. But she won’t do it. She knows she’s not crazy. So her solution? To stay home, to take the attacks and assaults. To continue her life going to school, furthering her life and coming home to an aggressive sexually charged unseen being. So the doctor calls her out on this, “So your going to stay home and take all the abuse you are so terrified by? That’s your solution?” She tells him no. She’s just not going to fight it any more. You can see on the doctors face, even though he feels having her evaluated would help things, and give her a clear definite answer to her condition. Seeing she has broken down to this point, of feeling that if she stops resisting, it’ll be happy and things might be normal. Well yeah, it’s sad.
Needless to say, things between her and the doctor do not go well. They part on the worst of terms. Him yelling at her about these things she believes and his plea for her to see reason and logic. But he goes a little too far and she’s done.
So for the night she goes to her good good friends house, deciding to stay there while they go out to a function. But the moment, the very moment those two are gone and in their car. The ghost begins destroying everything in sight. Breaking every window, tossing the shelves off the walls. Everything in the house is torn apart. They run upstairs and enter just in time to see the kitchen explode. Cabinets flying open, glass bursting in all directions.
It’s scary as hell but it gives her vindication! Her best friend saw it happen. Even if her husband refuses to admit to it. She tells her over and over she saw it, it was real and she’s sorry she sent her to the clinic instead of looking for help from specialist. Again, Best freakin friend of the year. So they head out to the local book store. Picking up whatever they can on poltergeist, ghost, mental abilities.
Thankfully for us and her. She happens to hear two college men discussing paranormal phenomena. They decide to come see her house, she tells them about all the attacks, everything that’s happened and, thankfully for her, but sadly for their sanity. These two witness cold chills, burning electrical smells and shaking objects. So the Zakk Baggins crew sets up their equipment to begin monitoring her. Even going as far as all of them sleeping in the same room.
NO. No not together on the bed! This again is not Pornhub. They’re curled up with blankets in chairs asleep while she sleeps ontop of the covers on the bed. Although yes the ghost does show itself.
However not like before. This time its sending out force lightning in the room. But for some reason it can’t do anything. It’s not able to touch her, or attack her. Attack the others. Which makes her crazily happy. She even believes the ghost is dead. That having those men there with her, they were able to kill it! She even screams for it to die, and it does. Seem to die. The burst grow shorter and weaker, she laughs at it and eventually the shocks vanish. The three jump onto the bed and share a group hug. She even pulls her kids out of bed and hugs them all. Telling them things are looking bright and it’s a brand new day!
Or is it?!?!!!
Well they show their proof to the head lady in charge, examining photographs of the ghost. Which eerily enough some of the photos seem to outline a male figure in the electric shocks. Again this doctor is very clinical and takes it seriously. She tells them she needs to discuss her case and initial diagnosis with the doctor she was seeing before, and to go ahead and begin fully setting up every test they can run in her home to prove and or disprove these events.
So her doctor isn’t pleased by any of this, of course. For a few reasons. He feels these people are looking for something fantasy based, and will exploit her and any possible mental illness she might be suffering, feeding her delusions. He tries apologizing for how things ended with them, and even pleads with her to see him, while also letting these people monitor things. But she won’t have it. She trusted him, put her faith in him and for nothing. He wouldn’t believe her and now here she is finally finding people that do believe her. So yeah. She’s in the right. Sort of. I mean they will exploit her likely if it means helping their cause. But it is proving however that she is actually under threat. So for the first time since this began. She’s feeling confident and strong. Which seems to be having an effect on the ghost, and thankfully her own well being.
Yes the ghost does show up again with a full house waiting for it. But it does so in grand fashion. Not like it had previously. It’s going all out with the budget this time.
It shoots off a Pink Floyd light show to begin the evening and when the crowd begins chanting for it to show itself. The Entity obliges. Its theme music blast and out comes a green gloating light skull…thing. Then poof it’s gone.
Naturally the doctors are blown away by this, it’s something none of them can believe just happened. But it did. They approach it logically, again. Good for you film. They discuss if this was a mass shared delusion. If it really did happen and how they can proceed with these findings. What it means for them, for her. Everything. They’re not done yet, and Carla is beside herself. Even more so when of all people to let themselves into her home. Her manfriend boyfriend comes in to surprise her. With a bottle of wine and a gift. Naturally puzzled over all the equipment in the house, and finding her now looking and feeling healthier. However. Now she has to come clean with him about everything and why they are all there.
Which is an interesting scene for how they carry it out and their carefully chosen words.
She lays it all out for him and he reacts how he should. He takes it as she was having trouble sleeping and wants to know why she has a full university team there because of sleep problems. So she has to admit “I’m having trouble telling what’s real and what’s in my head.”, “I was attacked but no one was there, no one could see them but it was real in my mind.” So yeah, he’s a bit worried now. She can see this and as he isn’t listening to what she’s trying to clearly tell him. She gives in and tells him its okay, things are fine and better now. So he laughs it off, kisses her, and presents her with his gift, of all things. Lingerie. You can tell this is a meaningful relationship when your man brings you lingerie and wine when he comes back.
Only things are about to get worse. A lot. It’s the most intense assault of the film and rather graphic. As he’s dousing his mouth in banaca breath spray, readying for love making. He enters the bedroom and finds her there on the bed. Spread out. Pinned to the bed panting and openly begging him to help her. Gasping for air. She is, full on naked and the prop breast are being roughly squeezes and flattened, parts of her body are being pressed against and its intense. He isn’t sure what to make of any of this. He sees her there and things she’s doing this for him, to be taken. But you can see his face begin to turn into one of worry as he reaches for her and tries to hold her. But as he does so he’s violently thrown into her dresser. He sees the assault on her intensify and as it does so, so does his anger. He gets back up, grabbing a chair. Apparently the knock to his back and head made him think he was in the squared circle and this was Wrestlemania. He goes in for a chair shot to the back of the entity. But this Entity is the cream of the crop and moves out of the way. Leaving Poor Carla to take the full force of the chair. Which is not doing favors for the manfriend boyfriend. As Carla’s son saw this and thinks he was attacking her. So he begins pummeling on him as the ghost yeets out of the room entirely.
This was not an ideal evening. For anyone.
Well her doctor is happy. Not for the assault. But because for him. This should constitute as proof enough her mental state has reached levels of dangers to herself and others. He just needs the manfriend boyfriend to comfort her, and get her to get the help he suggested.
But he won’t have it. The guy is so shaken by what he’s experienced, that he’s done. Not just done with the hospital and doctors. But with her. “If it were cancer, or a disease, I could take it. But this. This is too much”, the doctor tries convincing him to stay. Especially given her current state. Even if she ISN’T committed. She needs SOME kind of support. But nope. He’s gone. But not before he tells the doctor as seriously as he can. That this was real. What he witnessed happened and there was nothing he could do. So score a loss for the doctor, and a win for the parapsychology team.
Speaking of which. We are ready for a final showdown now. This thing took away her manfriend boyfriend, assaulted her for the last time and she wants her life back for good. So the team has a plan. Which does not really make much sense in fixing things, it also is where this story veers right off the road and into fantasy land.
They plan to setup in the university gymnasium. A full scale reproduction of her home. But with no roof, visible sections and, a trap. They plan to use Helium and nitrogen to freeze the ghost. If they can manage to freeze the Entity. They will have proven that spirit phenomena, ghost. Have mass. Therefore exist in this world. So. Okay. Yay for them proving ghost have mass? But how does this help her? Well we can only hope maybe that means it can be trapped.
So the stage is set. The trap is set. Lets get it on!
But we have some complaints from the crowd. It seems her doctor is NOT pleased with any of this. He feels it’s a death trap given the chemicals they’ll have and be using with her in that closed area. But they can’t stop the experiment. So the doctor decides screw the campus and my career! I’m goin down there and I’m gonna rescue her!
Which he tries! And fails! Because campus security is restraining him. But they allow him to stay behind. Hearing he planned on screwing with things to get Carla to safety. The head of his department comes down there and will stay as well to make sure nothing harmful occurs to anyone, and if it does. Heads. Will. Roll!
Well, it’s not an easy battle. For sure. Carla is chased around this house by the entity. And it nearly gets her a few times. It took over the electronics and is trying to spray her with the freezing chemicals. But she manages to escape and reach the safety room they built for her. A triangular glass encasement so they can just flood the whole thing with all that beautiful chemical gas.
Which they do!! Gloriously. And there by the grace of early CGI, we have a towering and I do mean TOWERING high perfectly frozen mass of Entity!
Which burst into frozen pieces everywhere….
But the good news is they proved it exist! That ghost have mass! Even MORE important, is the doctor and his head of department SAW ALL OF IT! They bared witness to the phenomena!
Which brings to us, at our conclusion a few downers.
Yes those doctors saw this happen, saw that thing, saw ghostly powers at work. But the head dude is shook. He says he wasn’t sure what he saw, and he won’t confess to having seen what they all saw. So he is labeled rightfully so, a bastard. The other doctor well. He’s speechless. And likely went the same route.
As for Carla? She returns to their home, which is now empty. She’s moving out and on with her life. But she steps back into the house one last time, to say goodbye to it. And as she does so. We learn that yes the ghost has mass. I mean to be fair she felt it inside her so that’d be mass right there. But the Entity is still very much all in one piece, but also possibly more forward, if not more powerful. As this time it talks aloud to her. “Welcome home, Carla” it rightfully creeps her out, but she neverminds it, and walks back out the door to her winner of the best friend of the year award, and her kids.
Which leads us to a title crawl where we learn this film was based on an actual event in California, in October of 76. It was considered to be one of the most extraordinary cases on the history of parapsychology. We also learn she moved to Texas where she lives with her children. But also that these attacks still continued for her.
So yes, about that. How true was the real story to this?
Well if anyone cares to look up the story of Doris Bither. You too can find out!
For those not wishing too well. Here’s the skinny
She claimed she was a victim of constant ‘spectral rape’ by three entities. Two small and one large. Her family also was attacked by these entities. Either they’d bump into them in the hallways or would get slapped around. Shoved, beaten. Apparently the attacks were so constant the kids nicknamed the entities and if you heard someone scream, or a loud thud. You knew what was up.
As for how things faired once the investigators showed up? There presence made this a lot worse. The attacks got more violent, and occurred more often. So yeah. Was not a fun time for anyone involved.
But yes, no gym in a University was used to build a replica of her house and freezing the entity. That was. Well yeah.
Honestly how was their experiment helpful to her in any way? I don’t get it. Like would they have handed her a nitrogen filled proton pack? Just blast the entity any time it showed up? Who knows.
All I know, is that this was a fun movie. It’s something I rarely watch. Because I believe great films really should be watched sparingly. Otherwise they might run out of whatever you felt made them special. I got that way with the Coppola version of Dracula. I loved that movie to death and I watched it every day. We rented it repeatedly, and when you could purchase the vhs? I got it for Christmas and I watched it everyday with a hot dog sandwich after school. Then I’d do homework, play Nintendo and rewatch it some more. Now if I think of watching the movie? I have an internal debate. Because I still love it. But It’s lost something for me.
This movie has not. I haven’t lost ant appreciation for it. Or how it portrays the characters within it. No one is evil, except the raping entity. No one is mocking her, her kids are supportive, her friend is the most supportive person in the history of friends. It felt like the Exorcist, where they approached it with respect and tried presenting things in both a clinical and fantastical way. It really helps with the believability of the film.
But getting someone to sit down and watch a film primarily about ghost rape well, good luck with that.
But you should! Seriously. Check it out, rent it, stream it, buy it and thank me later. It’s a good film. The box art was big and bold with lots of secrets behind it. It reminded me at first of The FLY Because all you had on the cover for that was the title, and the Brundle pod. With an arm and insect leg sticking out with bright lights. This cover is very similar. THE ENTITY fills up most of the poster . With green ethereal streaks of light bursting behind it. There was also a similar vhs at one point that featured the lead actresses head in a still from the film in the center under the title with beams around it.
There’s also a vintage foreign poster that features a eerie window, tehe title in creepy text and our star laying on a bed showing off large amounts of bare thigh and leg. So choose your own adventure there buddy.
I love this movie and it deserves the love it gets from its fans and those that dared to give it a try. Its on a lot of top ten list, even for famous directors too. So take my word for it, you won’t be disappointed. Give it a go!
